The protests were sparked by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi on 17 December 2010[14][15][16] and led to the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali 28 days later

Soros’ Open Society funded the main opposition voice in Tunisia, Radio Kalima, which championed the riots there that led to Ben Ali’s ouster.

The Open Society Foundations’ Arab Regional Office opened a satellite office in Tunisia.

Also after Ben Ali’s downfall, the Open Society sponsored Al-Bawsala, a public policy organization that monitored Tunisian parliament and local city halls across the country by “using new technologies to make information, such as budget analysis and the performance of officials, accessible to citizens,” according to the official description.

WikiLeaks cable from the US Ambassador in Tunis to his superiors in Washington made clear, “By many measures, Tunisia should be a close US ally. But it is not.” Why? “The problem is clear: Tunisia has been ruled by the same president for 22 years.”

Libya

Libya’s authoritarian regime led by Muammar Gaddafi put up much more of a resistance compared to the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia. While overthrowing the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia was a relatively quick process, Gaddafi’s campaign posed significant stalls on the uprisings in Libya

On 17 March 2011 the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1973,[81] with a 10–0 vote and five abstentions including Russia, China, India, Brazil and Germany. The resolution sanctioned the establishment of a no-fly zone and the use of “all means necessary” to protect civilians within Libya.

In the weeks that followed, American forces were in the forefront of NATO operations against Libya. More than 8,000 American personnel in warships and aircraft were deployed in the area. At least 3,000 targets were struck in 14,202 strike sorties, 716 of them in Tripoli and 492 in Brega.[84] The American air offensive included flights of B-2 Stealth bombers, each bomber armed with sixteen 2000-pound bombs, flying out of and returning to their base in Missouri in the continental United States.[85] The support provided by the NATO air forces contributed to the ultimate success of the revolution.[86]

Muammar Gaddafi, the deposed leader of Libya, was captured and killed on 20 October 2011

… graphic video of his last moments show rebel fighters beating him and one of them sodomizing him with a bayonet[2] before he was shot several times as he shouted for his life.

On 11 September 2012, Islamist militants mounted a surprise attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, killing the U.S. ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, and three others.

Libya has emerged as a major transit point for people trying to reach Europe

In June 2014, elections were held to the Council of Deputies, a new legislative body …

Libya has been riven by conflict between the rival parliaments since mid-2014. Tribal militias and jihadist groups have taken advantage of the power vacuum.

Another Swedish war effort, but this time sanctioned by UN, was the participation of Swedish fighter jets JAS in the ousting of Gadhafi in Libya. Juholt was against extending the activity.

The ousting of Ghadafi made mass immigration from Africa to Europe possible.
